i made a brash late night series of clicks and ended up bidding on an ebay auction for a car i probably don’t want, and definitely don’t need. i didn’t think my bid would be the highest.
there’s still a day and a half left on the auction and my bid is probably 60% of published market value for the car. so maybe i’ll be outbid. but i’ve noticed the classifieds have been innundated with these in the past few weeks.
won’t give the specifics, but it’s got 10 cylinders, and likely a yearly maintenance bill that’ll buy a gti or two.
what have i done.
(honda maclaren f1 v10, as i can’t think of any production hondas with v10s)

Now you must need a 535i E61 to shove that M5 engine in.

i guess its more that i REALLY want other cars. but the bid on this one was way low. so i figured what the hell. now i notice there doesn’t seem to be a reserve.
i guess we’ll see.

i cant think of an easier way into a v10. that smg is a little scary, but they seem to have figured out how to fix the primary issues without a $5000 replacement. the rod issues may be another story.

The SMG takes some intensive care, my business manger had one and he was told by a BMW service manager to have the system relearn the clutch every 500 miles. He took the advice and never had to replace any SMG components. Rod Bearing wear seems to be an 2000's era hallmark as both the S54 and S65 have similar issues. Parts don’t seem to be too expensive but I’m sure the labor is nuts.
The noise it makes is worth the price of admission though.

Any clue how much of a process it is to have the system relearn the clutch? If its something as easy as an ECU reset then it seems definitely worth it to keep the SMG from nuking itself
